The School of Medical Sciences of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST-SMS) has announced the opening of applications for the Graduate Entry Medical Programme (GEMP) for the 2026/2027 academic year.
The Graduate Entry Medical Programme is designed for applicants who hold a first degree in biomedical-related fields and seek to pursue a career in medicine. The programme aims to equip students with the essential theoretical knowledge and practical skills required to become competent medical practitioners.

The GEMP is structured in two main phases. The pre-clinical component spans three semesters, each lasting 16 weeks, and covers foundational medical courses such as Anatomy, Physiology and Biochemistry. Students who successfully complete this phase progress to the clinical component, which runs for three years and involves intensive hands-on training in hospitals and other healthcare settings. Upon completion of the programme, graduates are awarded the Bachelor of Medicine and Bachelor of Surgery (MBChB) degree.
Applicants must possess a good Bachelor of Science degree in approved biomedical-related programmes, including Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, Biomedical Engineering, Dietetics, Food Science and Technology, Herbal Medicine, Midwifery, Medical Laboratory Technology or Science, Nursing, Pharmacy, Physician Assistantship and Optometry.
In addition to the first degree requirement, applicants must satisfy one of the following academic qualifications. SSSCE or WASSCE holders must have credit passes in English Language, Mathematics and Integrated Science, as well as credit passes in three relevant elective science subjects. GCE candidates must have credit passes in five subjects at the Ordinary Level, including English Language and Mathematics, and at least three credit passes in relevant science subjects at the Advanced Level. International applicants and other qualified candidates with equivalent credentials from recognised institutions may also apply. Applicants from French-speaking countries are required to provide a minimum of one-year English Proficiency Certificate.
All applicants are required to pass an Access Course examination and attend a selection interview as part of the admission process.
The application period runs from January 19 to February 27, 2026. The list of shortlisted applicants will be published on March 9, 2026. The Access Course will be held from April 27 to May 11, 2026, with examinations scheduled from May 11 to May 14, 2026. Interviews will take place on May 18, 2026.
Prospective applicants are required to apply online and purchase an application e-voucher through approved channels. The application processing fee is GH¢250.00 for Ghanaian applicants and US$100.00 or GH¢1,550.00 for international applicants. The deadline for the submission of all applications is February 27, 2026.
