Rev. Dr. Bernard Kofi Turkson, Head of the Department of Herbal Medicine, encouraged students to embrace the programme with discipline and dedication. He highlighted that Herbal Medicine is more than studying plants, describing it as a field that combines science, culture, and healthcare.
“You are custodians of Ghana’s rich traditional medical heritage and future leaders in healthcare innovation,” he said. “Your training will prepare you to contribute to public health, research, industry, conservation of medicinal plants, and policy development—both locally and globally.”
Dr. Turkson further emphasized the importance of ethics, patient safety, and collaboration with other health professionals. He reminded students that healing is a calling, urging them to use their knowledge not only for academic success but also to serve society with compassion and excellence.
Rebecca Awinbila, President of GHEMSA, also addressed the freshers, welcoming them into both the Faculty and the student association. She shared her personal experience and encouraged the newcomers to engage in extracurricular activities, seek mentorship, and explore opportunities beyond the classroom.
“Be confident about this programme and about yourselves. Know what you want and deliberately go for it, because if you do not define your path, life will simply hand you anything,” she advised. Rebecca also emphasized the trust placed in the students by parents, the university, and the Faculty, urging them not to fail those who believe in their potential.
