UMAT SRC Women’s Commissioner 'Clashes' with SRC President over Budget Presentation

The SRC Women’s Commissioner of the University of Mines and Technology, Sharifa Haruna Azika, has issued a statement distancing her office from several projects presented during a recent SRC budget reading, saying the proposals did not originate from her office.

In a clarification released on March 9, 2026, the Women’s Commissioner said the only initiative formally submitted by her office to the Students Representative Council UMaT was the “Obaasima, Sua Biibi” project.

Her statement comes after controversy surrounding the presentation of multiple projects under the Office of the Women’s Commissioner during the SRC parliamentary sitting.

According to Miss Sharifa Haruna Azika, her Local Assembly representative and other representatives boycotted the reading of additional projects, including the Food Bank, Free Breakfast during Examination and the “SRC Me Dwene Wo Ho” initiative.

She explained that those projects were introduced by the SRC President and therefore should not have been listed under the Women’s Commissioner’s budget.

Following deliberations in the SRC Parliament, it was agreed that the GHS 30,000 allocation, which was mistakenly read as GHS 50,000 for the Food Bank project, would instead be redirected to support the “SRC Me Dwene Wo Ho” initiative. The allocation for the Free Breakfast during Examination programme was also reassigned to the “SRC Nyansapo” budget.

Miss Sharifa Haruna Azika maintained that the Food Bank initiative associated with her office would not rely on SRC funds or student levies.

“As I promised during my campaign, the Food Bank initiative under my office shall be funded entirely through sponsorship. That statement still holds,” she said.

She emphasised that her office has no affiliation with any of the other projects presented under the Women’s Commissioner’s budget apart from the “Obaasima, Sua Biibi” initiative.

“I therefore boldly declare that my office and I have no affiliation whatsoever with any other budget presented under the Office of the Women’s Commissioner apart from ‘Obaasima Sua Biibi’,” she stated.

The clarification follows growing discussions among students regarding the SRC budget presentation and the allocation of funds for various student welfare initiatives.
