Qualified candidates are invited to apply for a fully funded three-year PhD research scholarship at KNUST, Kumasi, commencing in the 2026/2027 academic year.

The scholarship supports full-time doctoral research in five priority areas: Sustainable Food Systems, Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture, Nutrition and Nutrigenomics, Entrepreneurship, and Packaging Systems and Innovation.
The application deadline is Tuesday, March 31, 2026.
General Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Hold a Master’s degree (MSc or MPhil) with a significant research component (thesis or dissertation).
- Have obtained their first Master’s degree within the last 15 years.
- Be willing and available to undertake full-time research.
- Secure admission to pursue a PhD at KNUST starting January 2027.
Research Areas and Requirements
1. Sustainable Food Systems
This area focuses on improving food production, processing, distribution, and consumption systems to enhance sustainability, resilience, food and nutrition security, and climate adaptation.
Eligible applicants must hold an MSc or MPhil in Food Science, Nutrition, Agriculture, Public Health, Environmental Science, Development Studies, or a related discipline with a strong research component.
2. Nutrition-Sensitive Agriculture
This field examines how agricultural systems, policies, and value chains can be intentionally designed to improve nutrition and health outcomes.
Applicants should hold an MPhil in Agriculture, Human Nutrition, Public Health, Food Science, Environmental Science, Development Studies, Natural Resource Management, Sociology, Geography and Regional Planning, Economics, Psychology, or related disciplines.
3. Nutrition and Nutrigenomics
This research area explores the interaction between diet, genes, and health, including how genetic differences influence nutritional needs and disease risk.
Eligible candidates must possess an MSc or MPhil in Nutrition, Dietetics, Food Science, Biochemistry, Biological Sciences, or related fields.
4. Entrepreneurship
This stream focuses on innovation, enterprise development, and translating research into scalable agri-food business solutions.
Applicants must hold an Honours Degree with at least a Second-Class Upper Division and a relevant Master’s degree such as MSc, MA, MBA, or MPhil in Business Administration or related management fields.
5. Packaging Systems and Innovation
This area investigates innovative and sustainable packaging solutions to improve food safety, quality, shelf life, and environmental sustainability.
Applicants must hold a Master’s degree in Packaging Technology, Food Science, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Environmental Science, or a related field, with demonstrated research aptitude.
Additional Desirable Qualifications
While not mandatory, the following will be considered an advantage:
- Scientific publications
- Conference presentations
- Prior research experience
Expectations of Successful Candidates
Successful applicants must be willing to relocate to KNUST for the full duration of the scholarship and fully participate in all research and project activities from January 2027.
